Getting a new puppy might be something which has always been on your bucket list. It can be a great way to add some life and fun to the household and a little puppy can be an amazing way to make friends and feel like a happy family. Here are some new puppy tips that can help.

When you get a new puppy you will likely want to enroll them in a dog training program and get meeting new dog owner friends right away, but there are some other things you need to do and think about too. Here are our top tips for getting a puppy and making sure that they are well behaved this year.

Get a Crate

Although you want to let your dog have access to the whole house, a crate can be a good way when your puppy is smaller to teach them a safe bed time and to stop them wrecking the home during their teething stage. A dog can actually love a crate as it makes them feel safe, and this is a great way to train them.

Share Your Bedroom

When you bring a puppy into your home it will be a scary experience for them and they might be scared and intimidated. You need to make your puppy feel safe and the best way to do this is to let them sleep in your room. Whether on your bed, on a bed on the floor or in a crate, having your puppy in your bedroom with you is a great way to make them feel safe and get used to your scent.

Baby Gates are a Godsend

If you want any advice about having a puppy, get a baby gate. Baby gates can be a great way to segregate parts of the home from your dog to keep them safe and off the expensive surfaces of the home. Usually a baby gate will be placed at the bottom of the stairs and this can be an awesome way to do things.

Supervise Well

During the first few months of having a dog you need to keep your eyes open. Make sure to always watch your dog and ensure that you always know where they are and what they are doing.

Set Up a “Puppy Room”

Puppies need to feel safe and they will also need somewhere to learn how to do their business. Set up a part of the house in the bathroom or hallway where there is a training pad for business and where they have a bed and some toys to play with. This will be somewhere your dog always goes back to and it will help them get used to doing their business in one place.

Let Him Make Friends

Building up the sociability of your dog early is important and when you have a dog you should take the time to introduce them to other dogs from a young age. This will stop them being nervous and will also prevent aggression later on in life.
